League of Legends Odyssey Guide

A New Alternate Universe Within LoL

Now and again, Riot Games likes to mix it up and release smaller stories within League of Legends. These stories feature the same champions we all know and love, but in an alternate universe. For example, K/DA is a Kpop group featuring League of Legends champions. These champions include Ahri, Akali, Kai’Sa, and Evelynn. However, each of these characters has a different backstory than their usual one.

League of Legends has three alternate universes: K/DA, Star Guardian, and Odyssey. Each alternate universe comes with unique skins for each champion part of the universe. Players can buy these skins to add to their League of Legends accounts. Alternate universes are unique ways to introduce skins and fun little ways to increase the League of Legends reach.

We are focusing on the alternate universe Odyssey and what it brings to the game.

What Is Odyssey?

Odyssey is an alternate universe within the game League of Legends. Odyssey offers 12 skins for each champion associated with this event. The Odyssey focuses on the Morning Star Crew but has other factions. The Morning Star Crew consists of Jinx, Malphite, Sona, and Yasuo. Each character has its lore and background.

The official synopsis of Odyssey:

“The great Demaxian Empire has laid claim to almost every inhabited system, ignoring the objections of the ancient Templar Order and the criminal Syndicate alike, pursuing the wondrous bounty of ora. This mysterious golden essence—drawn from the vast, majestic creatures that patrol the stars—is the lifeblood of all civilization, but also promises untold power to those who can wield it for themselves”

To learn more about the lore of Odyssey, The Lure, a short story, can be read for free. This short story is available on the official League of Legends website.

Odyssey Game Mode: Extraction

The release of Odyssey also came with a limited-time game mode called Odyssey: Extraction. Odyssey: Extraction was a temporary PvE game mode available from September 12th to October 8th, 2018. Riot Games has stated that it will most likely not come back.

It was considered a hit with gamers before when it was released. Sadly, it looks like it won’t ever be coming back. Riot Games has hinted that it was a one-time thing. Let’s talk about the general gameplay of Odyssey: Extraction.

Odyssey: Extraction Overview

Odyssey features five players working together to take down waves of enemies in a small arena map. Once your team defeats all the enemies in one room and collects enough Ora, players will be able to move on to the next.

In the end, a boss will appear. The boss is the Odyssey version of Kayn. Defeating him completes the game mode and unlocks the next difficulty. There are five different difficulties, in the form of queues. The following list is from least complex to most difficult:

  • Intro
  • Cadet
  • Crewmember
  • Captain
  • Onslaught

Everyone will start on the easiest difficulty and work their way up to the hardest. However, you can skip to a greater difficulty if you join a friend who has already unlocked a greater difficulty.

In this game mode, you can only play as an Odyssey champion. All the Odyssey champions are available for everyone during the event. The default skin will also be their new odyssey skin when selected.

The following champions can be used:

  • Jinx
  • Malphite
  • Sona
  • Yasuo
  • Ziggs

There is also a small progression system in place called Augments. These augments persist on your LoL account for the event’s entirety. There are a lot of augments that can be earned for each character. All characters have one passive augment.

These augments are what will make your character play differently than others. For example, Malphite is a tank. However, he can be turned into a more bruiser role with the right augments. He will be able to have good health while also dishing out good damage.

During the match, powerups and items will spawn around the arena. Hitting these can award players money, Ora, heal them, or unlock augments. The team should be on the lookout for these valuable buffs. However, there are small traps that can also spawn on the map.

Players can also purchase items with gold. These do not stay on your League of Legends account like augments. You will need to earn gold and buy Elo boosting these every match. These items will help compliment your build and team composition.

Using everything at your disposal will help you make it to the final boss and beat this limited-time event.

Conclusion

In short, Odyssey is a significant slight detour in League of Legends if you are looking for different lore to read about. They may dive more into it sometime in the future. On the other hand, Odyssey:

Extraction was a fun game mode that people found fun and a good change of pace. However, it looks like this game mode will not be coming back. If you missed out on it, then there is a good chance you won’t be able to experience it at all.
